Disappeared

A gorgeous collection of poems that are layered with political and familial messages and metaphors, spanning from the New Jersey Turnpike to Buenos Aires.

In an exploration of disappearance, Jasmine Bailey uses real-life political concealment and natural decay to explain forms of departure. Going between time and spaces such as her hometown in New Jersey to the Dirty War in Argentina, Bailey effectively conveys her understandings of what it means to lose, search for, or be haunted by, a person, place, or memory.

You had never lost anyone and wanted to see grief, so went to Plaza de Mayo where mothers marched twenty-five years around the fountain, between stalls selling flags and the cathedral, …They shared their abundance with us like bread beneath the palace where Evita lifted her hands, and Juan Peron’s body swallowed her collapse.
